For artist and father Dominick Cabalo, however, his son Nicholas' lunches are an oil painting cloth for creativity. Cabalo makes carefully designed drawings on each of 12-year-old Nicholas paper lunch bags, usually representing popular lively characters and colorful superheroes. Cabalo began drawing on the bags about three years ago to help Nicholas make new friends in elementary school. “ I noticed he was a bit shy when it came to talking to others,” he said. “ So by creating a piece of artwork to ‘break the ice’, kids would come up to him and start talking and hopefully a conversation, or better yet, a new friendship, would start. " Though Nicholas is in middle school now, he still asks his dad to draw on the lunch bags, and will make requests for characters or drawings that he’d like to see on the next bag. Cabalo has drawn about 400 lunch bags in the past three years. He explained that the bags had really helped his son become more confident at school. “He’s broken out of his shell because of this, and I like to think that I had a hand in helping him do this with these bags. " he wrote. Nicholas keeps most of the bags. " Some come back in better condition than others, "Cabalo said. “We may lose one due to the occasional wet sandwich or leaky drink, but that's to be expected. " As for thebags that make it home undamaged, Cabalo posts their photos to social media. His favorites are the moretime-consuming series of bags that can be joined up to create a larger image, such as the "Finding Nemo” triptych(三联画)24. Speakers of more than three languages are known as polyglots. And when we refer to people who speak many languages, perhaps a dozen or more, we use the term hyper-polyglot . The most famous hyper-polyglot was Giuseppe Mezzofanti, a 19th century Italian cardinal, who was said to speak 72 languages. This claim sounds (absurd. If you assume each language had 20, 000 words, Mezzofanti would have to learn a word a minute, six hours a day, for eleven years -an impossible task. But Mezzofanti was tested by critics, and they were all impressed. Did Mezzofanti have an extraordinary brain? Or are hyper-polyglots just ordinary people with ordinary brains who manage to do something extraordinary through hard work? U.S. linguist Stephen Drashen believes that outstanding language learners just work harder at it and then they acquire unusually strong language ability. As an example, he mentions a Hungarian woman who worked as an interpreter during the 2oth century. When she was 86, she could speak 16 languages and was still working on learning new languages. She said she learned them mostly on her own, reading fiction or working through dictionaries or textbooks. Some researchers argue to the contrary. They believe that there is such a thing as a talent for learning languages. In the 1930s, a German scientist examined parts of the preserved brain of a hyper-polyglot named Emil Krebs, who could speak 60 languages fluently. The scientist found that the area of Krebs's brain called Broca's area, which is associated with language, looked different from the Broca's area in the brains of men who speak only one language. However, we still don't know if Krebs was born with a brain ready to learn dozens of languages or if his brain adapted to the demands he put on it. Although it is still not clear whether the ability to learn many languages is inborn, there's no doubt that just about all of us can acquire skills in a second, third, or even fourth language by putting our mind to it .28. What does the underlined sentence imply? A. Mezzofanti could remember 360 words a day. B. Mezzofanti had a special way to learn languages. C. Mezzofanti's achievement was ridiculous. D. Mezzofanti's language ability was astonishing29. The Hungarian woman became a hyper- polyglot mainly because of her_______. A. good memory B. unique brain C. hard work D. Learning methods30. What did the German scientist's findings show? A. Krebs had an unusual brain. B. Krebs was born with great talent. C. Krebs had worked hard at languages. D. Krebs expected too much of himself31. What does the author seem to agree? A. It is not hard to learn foreign languages. B. Hard work plays a part in language learning. C. There is no such thing as a talent for languages. D. Hyper-polyglots have an inborn talent for languagesD It has been two months since I moved to China, but its digital advancement hasn't stopped impressing me ever since. One of the major things that I cannot imagine living without anymore is mobile payment. There are two major mobile payment apps here, Alipay and WeChat Pay. Both have similar payment features, though WeChat has more like a social media. That's why I will focus on this "super app” So far, I've been overwhelmed by how efficient life can be with WeChat. It is present in every aspect of people's daily life, from paying water and electricity bills, meals, cinema tickets to calling a taxi, following news, and chatting with friends. Most merchants have adopted it, from tiny local street food stalls to high-end (高端的 ) stores. A cashier may be surprised if you do not pay with WeChat or Alipay at the grocers or in restaurants. And it seems like the entire payment industry has encouraged this shift to mobile payment, equipping payment terminals with QR code scanners to simplify payments. Mobile payments are so common here that I realize that I can perfectly survive if I forget my wallet at home one day because most days I just don't take it out of my bag! As mentioned earlier, WeChat is also a major social media platform with about one billion daily users ,which is more than the entire population of European Union. So I have to say Chinese technological and digital development is a real miracle.32. What does the underlined word "overwhelmed" mean in paragragh 2? A. Encouraged. B Shocked. C. Confused D. Panicked 33. What can we learn from the passage? A. WeChat is more a social media than Alipay. B. All merchants have adopted mobile payment. C. A cashier may be surprised if you pay with WeChat or Alipay. D. It causes trouble if you don't take your wallet with you.34. What is the author's attitude to WeChat? A. Doubtful. B. Favorable. C. Opposed. D. Uncaring 35. What is the best title for the text? A. The Different Opinions About Mobile Payment B. The Development of Mobile Payment C. The Popularity of Chinese Mobile Payment D. Two Major Apps of Mobile Payment第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 If you think grandparents like recalling the good old days, you’re in for a surprise.
