A
My mother has always instilled in me the importance of education. Education is essential. It will help me get accepted to college if I perform well academically and advance my opportunities for success in the future. Most jobs now require at least a high school diploma, and for many jobs, a college degree is preferred. It is important that all students have excellent educators in their life to help them achieve and have the opportunity to go to college, get a job, support themselves and their family, and impact the community.
As we celebrate and honor all teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week, I’ve re flected on the impact my teachers have had, and will continue to have, in my life. From Mr. Bowker, who challenged me in math, to Mr. Bernsteen, my health teacher who taught me the value of hard work, my teachers have helped shape the student I am today. But one of the teachers who left a lasting impression on me was my s ummer school teacher, Mr. Davis, who impacted me beyond the classroom. He found time to connect with me on a personal level and talk to me after class. I felt like Mr. Davis cared about my academic success and was committed to setting an example of what’s possible.
Mr. Davis could relate to what it was like to be a rising ninth-grade black male in today’s society. He taught me how to speak up confidently and share my ideas with others. He told me that I was brilliant and that when I spoke, the world should listen. And when I would put my hand down because I was unsure of my answer, Mr. Davis would immediately say, “No guts, no glory.” He never made me feel inadequate; he encouraged me to always pursue knowledge because he, too, was learning every day. Mr. Davis helped me navigate the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities.
I think having more black male teachers like Mr. Davis in the classroom could increase students’ success. They would share the background and experiences of many of their students and help build long-lasting teacher/student relationships. But, unfortunately, the likelihood that students of color in Nevada will have a teacher that looks like them is one of the lowest in the country.
As the student population becomes more ethnically diverse, teachers in Nevada still are predominantly (显著地)white. According to a 2012 Education Week report, in the Clark County School District, nearly 70 percent of students identified as students of color, but 76 percent of teachers were white. The numbers for black male teachers are more discouraging. Just 2 percent of teachers nationwide are black men.
But you can help change the numbers. Whether you decide to study education in college or graduate school, or apply to programs in Las Vegas such as Teach For America, I hope more black males will consider teaching as a career.
My peers and I need more examples of excellence and success in classrooms—examples who look like us. You can be the model to impact our life and push us to achieve. You can ensure that, when we look to the front of the room, we can see a little bit of ourselves reflected back.
21. Mr. Davis left the author with a very deep impression mainly because he ________.
   A. was extremely knowledgeable and hard-working
   B. was a role model to teach hearts and change minds
   C. spent much time helping the author with his homework
   D. kept in close touch with the author even after graduation
22. The underlined word “guts” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.
   A. bravery    B. connection   C. opportunity   D. qualification
23. By writing the passage, the author intends to ________.
   A. show students’ love for their teachers     B. appeal to more black males to be teachers
   C. express sympathy for students of color D. advertise for black male teachers

Thousands of taxi drivers in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, reportedly blocked streets with their vehicles on Sunday in protest against unlicensed vehicles using taxi-hiring apps (打车软件) and apps-based car rental companies providing passenger services, including high-end cars. Although the drivers also complained about the withdrawal of the fuel subsidy(补贴) by the government, their main complaint was the loss of business because of the rising number of Internet-based car services companies.
On Wednesday, news reports came that Beijing transport authorities will take measures to stop the illegal “taxi business” of private cars through the newly rising Internet apps, following the footsteps of Shenyang and Nanjing.
It is not yet clear how the Shenyang city government will handle the issue and whether it will declare the services offered by market leaders such as Didi Dache, a taxi-hiring app provider backed by Tencent Holdings, and Kuaidi Dache illegal. But Shanghai transport regulators have set a rule, by banning Didi Zhuanche, or car services offered by Didi Dache in December.
Such regulations will cause a setback to the car-hiring companies and investors that are waiting to cash in on the potentially booming business. Just last month, Didi Dache got $700 million in funding from global investors, including Singapore state investment company Temasek Holdings, Russian investment company DST Global and Tencent. Besides, the market is uncertain that Kuaidi Dache is about to finalize its latest round of funding after getting $800 million from global investors.
Regulatory uncertainties, however, could cast a shadow on the future of the Internet-based car-hiring services, which have become popular in most of China’s big cities. To be fair, these companies’ business model is anything but bad. For example, Didi Zhuanche works side by side with established car rental companies to provide high-end car service mainly for businesspeople through the Internet and mobile phone apps.
Every link in this business model chain has legal companies and services. Therefore, it is hard to define it as illegal and ban it.
24. Why did taxi drivers in Shenyang block the streets with their vehicles?
A. Because they wanted the authority to increase their driving allowances.
B. Because they wanted to be taught how to use the taxi-hiring apps.
C. Because they wanted to appeal to passengers not to hire the private cars.
D. Because they wanted to make their main complaints known to the authority.
25. The author’s attitude to banning internet car-hiring service is __________.
A. positive         B. negative       C. neutral          D. unclear
26. Which of the following statements is True?
  A. All the taxi drivers in China benefit a lot from taxi-hiring apps.
  B. Taxi drivers mainly complained about the withdrawal of the fuel subsidy by the government.
  C. The Internet-based car-hiring services have become popular all over China.
  D. The Internet-based car-hiring services are challenging the traditional taxi industry.
27. We can learn from the passage that __________.
A. Shenyang forbade apps-based car rental companies
B. Shanghai is the second city banning Didi Zhuanche
C. it is not difficult to picture the apps-based car rental companies illegal
D. some international investment companies have strong faith in the future of apps-based car rental companies

Service Foods makes it easier for cooks to reduce mealtime complains. Service Foods is so confident that they can reduce complaints, in fact, that the company is offering a series of mealtime complaint-reduction tips.
According to a representative of Service Foods, complaints can occur when busy cooks serve substandard, low quality meats. As products sit in packaging in the meat case at the store, the meat can age out too much. The natural flavor disappears, and it can be replaced with an undesirable strange flavor. According to Service Foods, complaints from children are common when you serve substandard meats. Service Foods meats are all natural and organic, meaning the meats have-no chemicals or water or colorings that could change the taste. And the meats are flash-frozen right after cutting, so they wont taste strange to your children.
If youre facing different types of complaints, Service Foods may still be able to help you. Some families have mealtime boredom. 参考范文:
Dear Helen,
Thank you for your email. Now I would like to tell you something about the extra-curricular reading in our school. As a matter of fact, most of the students in our school haven’t realized the importance of reading, especially extra-curricular reading. Therefore, the time and energy devoted to reading are limited. Besides, some students prefer to read comic books, magazines and newspapers rather than classic reading materials.
I think the reasons for such phenomenon are various. First of all, quite a lot of students are burdened with too much homework. Still others haven’t formed a good habit of reading. They would rather spend time on TVs or computer games instead.
However, reading is obviously beneficial to both our life and study, which can not only broaden our horizon but enrich our life as well. So it is quite necessary for us students to take up reading and for teachers to lessen the amount of homework so that we can have more time to read.
Best Wishes.
                                                               Yours,
                                                               Li Hua
