阅读下面短文,从每题所给四个选项中选出最佳答案。
There was one shop in the town of Mufulira which was widely known for its racial discrimination. It was a drugstore. While Europeans were served at the counter, a long line of Africans queued at the window and often not only were kept waiting but were rudely treated by the shop assistants. One day I was determined to make a public protest(抗议) against this kind of thing, and many of the schoolboys in my class followed me to the store.
I simply went into the shop and asked the manager politely for some medicine. As soon as he saw me standing in the place where only European customers were allowed to stand he shouted at me in a bastard(怪声怪气的) language which is only used by a boss when speaking to his servants. I stood at the counter and politely requested in English that I should be served. The manager became angry and said to me in English, "If you stand there till Christmas, I will never serve you."
I went to the District Commissioner's office. I saw a young District Officer who was a friend of mine. He was very concerned to hear my story and told me that all I had to do was come to him personally and he would buy my medicine for me. I protested that that was not good enough. I asked him to accompany me back to the store and to make a protest to the manager. This he did, and I well remember him saying to the manager, "Here is Mr. Kaunda who is a responsible member of the Urban Advisory Council, and you treat him like a common servant. " The manager of the drugstore apologized and said, "If only he had introduced himself and explained who he was, then, of course I should have given him proper service.
I had to explain once again that he had missed my point. Why should I have to introduce myself every time I went into a store... any more than I should have to buy my medicine by going to a European friend? I want to prove that any man of any color, whatever his position, should have the right to go into any shop and buy what he wanted. After all, the money which I paid across the counter was exactly the same money as is paid by a European customer.
1.The writer was, at the time of the story, ________.[  ]
A.a black school teacher           B.an African servant

C.a European officer               D.a rich black

2.The manager of the drugstore shouted at the writer because ________.[  ]
A.he hadn't learned to speak English
B.he thought the writer wouldn't understand English
C.that was the usual language used by Europeans when speaking to Africans
D.that was the only language he could speak when he was angry
3.Why didn't the writer wait at the window of the drugstore like other Africans?[  ]
A.Because he thought he was educated and should be treated differently.
B.Because he thought, being an important person, he should not be kept waiting.
C.Because he thought his white friends would help him out.
D.Because he wanted to protest against racial discrimination.

For many people, one of the pleasures of traveling abroad is buying the arts and crafts of a foreign culture. English tourists in Hong Kong, for example, like Chinese arts and crafts because they think they are exotic. Even things as common as a pair of chopsticks a mah-jong set or a name stamp, are popular items for visiting tourists. They are typical examples of Chinese culture which make attractive ornaments(装饰品) for the home and good presents for friends.
So when Philip Wong and his sister Anna left school and tock over their father's tourist shop in Tsim Sha Tsui, they were not surprised to find that many tourists were interested in these small, relatively inexpensive goods. "Even so, we found that business was not really very good. We had a lot of competition and only made a small profit on most of the items we sold," said Philip. "Then Anna had the idea of selling arts and crafts from other countries as well!"
The pair went on a shopping trip around the Southeast Asian area, making contracts in Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. They bought jewelry, clothes and art work in all these countries and displayed them in a special section of their shop. They were surprised to see how popular these goods were-not only among foreign tourists, but also with local people.
Now they have opened a new shop in North Point which sells goods from many more countries, including some in European and South America. The shop is specially with Hong Kong people such as businessmen, who travel abroad a lot, but never have the time to buy gifts while they are away. "Actually some of our customers just want to impress their friends by pretending that they have actually visited the country," added Anna with a smile.

A.Strange and unusual.
B.Common and popular.

B.Because their goods are not good enough.
C.Because they are not allowed to get high profit.
D.Because they don't know how to make a big profit from their business.
3.Who were surprised at the goods in a special section of the shop?[  ]
A.Philip and Anna.

B.Tourists.
C.Philip, Anna and local residents.

D.Both travelers abroad and people in Hong Kong.
4.What do you think of some trade-men who buy some articles in Hong Kong?[  ]
A.They want to make themselves understand that they've visited the country.
B.They have not got enough money to get them in the country they are visiting.

C.They find no time to get them while they are visiting the country.
D.Though they travel a lot, they never think they should buy some of the articles at all.

I'm interested in the furnished cottage near Dedham which you made known in yesterday's newspaper, for my husband and I are coming to England in June and will stay at the cottage for three months. Would you please tell me exactly where it is and give me some information about bus and train service in the area? We need a cottage on a busy street. And I would also like to know about the shops there. Do the shops still supply? I know they did ten years ago.
I would also be thankful if you would tell me whether you supply sheets, etc, and whether a laundry (洗衣店) calls at the house. The rent you ask sounds reasonable for the size of the cottage. How do you like it paid? Weekly, monthly or in advance?
I would be thankful for an early reply.

阅读下面短文,从A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳答案。
In 1954 a turning point in medical history, resulting from applied bionics; was the first "open heart" surgery done in Minneapolis, Minnesota, by Dr. W. Lillehei's techniques for the first time allowed the patient to be operated on while blood was supplied to the patient from a donor. Today "open heart" surgery, using more complicated methods and bionic devices, is common in the United States.
Important technological advances such as those already mentioned have encouraged scientists to develop the artificial heart. Early in 1983, in its first use by a human patient, a medical team at the University of Utah Medical Center replaced the diseased heart by a Jarvik-7.
The world watched amazed as television pictures of Dr. Clark showed him as he improved steadily after the surgery. His continued life demonstrated, that a bionic device could imitate the action and function of a healthy heart. Dr. Clark lived for 112 days.
Life-like or bionic machines have existed for several centuries. The development of tools by man's ancestors is a good example of the application of bionics to extend human capabilities. Modern bionic research is especially involved in prosthetics devices that substitute for, or replace lost or diseased body parts such as arms, legs, and eyes.
Recent advances in electronics have enabled scientists to make better use of electrical impulses in the control of prosthetic devices. One interesting research project is the development of an artificial eye in which video signals are transformed into fight patterns that are sent into nerve receptors in the patient.
The future for applied bionics seems to be promising. Existing bionic devices will become smaller, faster, and more effective. The artificial heart used for Dr. Clark is only one of experimental replacement devices. It is likely to be joined in the future by replacements for other internal systems or organs.
Bionic livers, stomachs, and lungs are not impossibilities!

A.The application of bionics.
B.The first "open heart" surgery.

D.used more sophisticated methods to do "open heart" surgery
3.By "Dr. Clark lived for 112 days", the author most probably means that ________.[  ]
A.the replacement of Dr. Clark's heart was a failure
B.there was still a long way to go in applied bionics
C.applied bionics was promising
D.the first artificial heart was most effective
4.The control of artificial devices is improving because ________.[  ]
A.video signals can be transformed into light patterns
B.bionic machines have existed for centuries
C.artificial devices such as arms, legs and eyes require better control than bionic machines
D.science has made great advances in electronics
