When you are learning a language, listening, speaking and writing are important, but reading can also be very helpful. When you read, not only can you learn some new words, but also you can learn how to use them. When you read, it gives you a good example for writing.
Here are some good reading tips.
Firstly, try to read at the right level(水平) . Read something that you can understand. If it is too hard for you, it cannot attract you.
Secondly, try to increase the number of your new words. If there are four or five new words on a page, don't use a dictionary. Instead, try to guess their meanings as you read and write them in your own vocabulary book. Try to look them up in the dictionary and remember them later.
Thirdly, try to read for a short time once a day. Fifteen minutes or half an hour every day is better than two hours every Sunday. For example, you can read before you go to bed, or before you get up or at lunchtime. If you continue doing that, you will improve your writing.
Lastly, read something that interests you. Choose a newspaper, a book or a magazine about a subject that you like. It is easy enough for you to understand. There is something interesting in it.

Famous writer Mo Yan gave his suggestions about exams during the Two Sessions (“两会”) . Students have their own ideas.Xu Youyou, 12,
I don't completely
agree with Mo Yan. Yes! There should be no primary school graduation exam. All the students can finish their primary school, so there is no need to make them take an exam. Also, I agree with his idea of studying for 10 years in primary and middle schools. But I think the senior high school entrance exam is important. It helps us get used to stress.Fan Zhuoming, 13,
I agree with Mo Yan. Nowadays, we always spend a long time practicing the same things. It's a waste of time. If we have 10 years of school, we can save time and learn the courses more deeply. It's not necessary to take any entrance exams. Everyone should have a chance for further study.Zhao Jiacheng, 13,
I disagree with Mo Yan. Exams push us to work hard. In my view, we should study in primary school for only five years but in junior middle school for four years, and then in senior high school for another three years.

A. There should not be a primary school graduation exam.
B. Students should study for 10 years in primary and middle schools.

“Dong” is one of China's 55 ethnic minorities(少数民族), with a population of less than three million, mainly living in South China. The ethnic group is well known for its traditional embroidery(刺绣), which has long been passed down from generation to generation(世代相传).
Qin Naishiqing is a master of Dong embroidery in Sanjiang Dong Autonomous Country in the southern part of Guangxi. At the age of 91, she is still good at cutting paper patterns, which she says is the spirit of the handmade art.
“You should be very skillful in embroidery to become good at paper cutting. When you get a piece of paper, you should form a picture of the patterns in your mind without actually drawing them, ” Qin said.
Teaching embroidery is a family tradition, and Qin's two daughtersinlaw usually join her in teaching youngsters(年轻人). Phoenixes(长生鸟), dragons and flowers are common patterns featured in folk art, which are reproduced on embroidered products.
Spider flowers, seen as a symbol of good wishes, are very important in Dong people's embroidery patterns.
Every Dong girl is encouraged to learn the skill at an early age, around 9 or 10 years old. When she gets married, she will traditionally receive a whole set of clothes, including a wedding dress, made by her mother.
There are now thousands of women in the country taking up embroidery—an art form that has remained unchanged over the years. Qin hopes she can help make sure the tradition continues for future generations.

Almost everybody in America will spend a part of his or her life behind a shopping cart. He or she will push it many miles. But few of them know who invented it.
Sylvan N. Goldman invented the shopping cart in 1937. At that time, he was in the supermarket business. Every day he would see shoppers carrying the shopping baskets hard.
One day, Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets on wheels. It would make shopping much easier for his customers.
On June 4, 1937, Goldman's first carts were ready for use in his supermarket. He was so excited on the morning of that day as customers began arriving. He couldn't wait to see them using his invention. But everything was not as good as Goldman had hoped. Most shoppers gave the carts a good look, but nobody would give them a try. After a while, Goldman decided to ask customers why they didn't use his carts. “Don't you think this arm is strong enough to carry a shopping basket？” one shopper replied. But Goldman didn't lose heart. He knew his cart would be a great success if only people could give them a try. Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around his supermarket as if they were shopping! Seeing this, the real customers gradually began to follow them.
As Goldman had hoped, the carts made more and more customers come to his supermarket. As a result, more people came; more things were bought. With the carts, customers bought a greater number of things than before.

Where is the true home of the hamburger?
The kind of beef we see in hamburgers, minced(切碎) beef, was possibly invented by Mongolians over 800 years ago. But who first put the beef between pieces of bread and called it a hamburger? Three different cities in the United States all say that they were the first to invent America's favorite food.
Some people say that Fletchuer Davis, from Athens, invented hamburgers. “Old Dave”, as people called him, was selling minced beef sandwiches in his lunch bar as early as the 1880s. Some years later, a group of Germans called his
sandwich a “hamburger” because people from the German city of Hamburg ate this kind of beef.
Other people believe that the hamburger came from a different American city. Coincidentally, its name was also Hamburg. The Menches brothers were selling pork sandwiches at a fair in 1885, but when there was no more pork, they used minced beef and gave it a new name, the “hamburger”.
The third possible inventor of the hamburger was Charlie Nagreen, also known as “Hamburger Charlie”, from Seymour. He said that in 1885 he invented the world's first hamburger. Seymour now celebrates the invention of the hamburger every year. In 1989, it was the home of the world's largest ever burger—over 2, 500kg!

I have created a useful device. Let me tell you something about it.
The device can be easily used. We just need to connect it with the gas stove first. When we use it, set the cooking time. Then instead of keeping an eye on the food which is being cooked, we can watch TV, have a rest or go shopping outside. When time is up, the device will cut off the gas. This device is more helpful when we cook meat or make soup.

It is certainly a wonderful invention that can be widely used in our daily life. I hope my invention will help more people.

Usually, there are a lot of school rules for students to follow. However, in New Zealand, there is an unusual school called Deep Green Bush School set up by Moncarz. In this school, there are no lessons, no homework and no tests. “We don't do things like telling kids it is time to write or learn. When they get interested in doing it, they do it, ” says Moncarz. Read on to see what people think of this school.

In your school, are you allowed to choose the subjects you want to learn? If you don't like a subject, can you choose not to take it? Of course, the answer is “No” in most schools in China.
In America, there is a school trying something new. At a high school in Florida, students will be able to choose their own classes. At this school students are able to find subjects they are interested in and possibly even find the field(领域) they would like to go into after school. They are allowed to choose a subject like biology, math, a foreign language, or study skills like computer or car repair.
Some people think this is a good idea, because it helps students think about what they want to do in the future, and the school helps to give them the knowledge and skills needed to get there. Others disagree. They think it will make it difficult for students to discover different possibilities(可能性). They point out that fourteenyearold teenagers are too young to know what they want to do in the future.
How do you think? Would you like to be able to choose your own classes? Would you like to decide what you learn at school? People have made many useful changes in education, but seeing the differences in each student is also important. What are they interested in? How can we help each student become a better student?
( )51. Students at a high school in Florida are allowed to ________.
A. go to college without taking exams
B. find parttime jobs they would like to do
C. choose a subject that they are interested in
D. go out on school nights at any time

A. students are too nervous to make a right decision
B. students care little about their own future
C. students aren't old enough to know what they want to do
D. students don't have enough time to do so
( )54. What can we know from the text?
A. All the high schools in Florida give students the chance to choose their own classes.
B. Some people think allowing students to choose their classes can help them find different possibilities.
C. A school in Florida helps students by giving the knowledge and skills they need.
D. All the students in China can choose their own subjects they like.
( )55. What is the best title for the text?
A. Chinese education B. A new way of education
C. To change our education D. How to studyⅦ.

I don't like some of my school rules, either. I think they are too strict, and they make me feel very uncomfortable.
Firstly, we must wear school uniforms at school. But I think we should be allowed to wear our own clothes two or three days a week. Then we can have a more colorful school life. Secondly, we are not allowed to rush around in the school. In my opinion, rushing around can help us get relaxed. Thirdly, boys mustn't make friends with girls. I think boys should be allowed to make friends with girls, which can help both boys and girls improve themselves. It's a great way to learn from each other.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon(巴比伦空中花园) are one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. And these gardens are one of the greatest mysteries in the world. They are a large collection of plants that are hung from the walls of a palace in Iraq. Some stories described the Hanging Gardens were hundreds of feet tall, but some historians said that they were really not that high.
The reason behind the Hanging Gardens sounds like a fairy tale. A king built the gardens around 600 BC in order to make his wife less homesick(想家的). The king's wife missed her home in Medea where there were great mountains, so the king decided to bring the mountains to his palace. He ordered his men to build a huge hill and planted trees and flowers on it. Later, an earthquake happened in Babylon, destroying
a large part of the city, including the Hanging Gardens.
Today, some people think that the Hanging Gardens of Babylon isn't real because Babylonian records never talked about these amazing gardens.
However, the writings of some Greek historians gave lively descriptions of the gardens. Recently, some findings showed that some great gardens existed(存在) in Iraq. But they still need to be further proved(证明).

Margaret Porter is a violinist and music teacher. According to her, the best age to start learning the violin is between three and six. She says, “It's the time when you are learning about the world. ” Margaret, who lives in London, likes to take pupils at three and four. However, she has made lots of exceptions(例外) for fiveyearolds. She started teaching the violin in 1972 and she taught her children's fiveyearold school friends at first.
Margaret's pupils have group lessons. Each group has about twelve pupils and each lesson takes an hour, once half a month. Each pupil also has one individual(一个人的) lesson a week with her. Parents have to attend the classes. It is important that the parents take an active interest in the lessons.
In Margaret's opinion, it's important for one to know why music sounds the way it does. Without knowing it, one can't become a great musician at all. So from the earliest lessons, pupils in her class learn to play by ear. They do not even try to read music(读懂乐谱) until they have been playing for several years. Margaret says that her method(方法) is not meant to produce great violinists. She always suggests that pupils who perform very well should leave and study the violin using more traditional methods.
