☆What does the speaker want to tell us?
In this way，you may understand the passage better.

(词数：约250；建议用时：8分钟)Sing the Language You're Learning
How can you remember a song from your childhood to this day? Why do your teachers use songs to teach you English? It seems there is a scientific(科学的) reason for this.
Researchers are now studying the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They find that remembering words in a song is the best way to remember even the most difficult language.
“Singing could be a new way of learning a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are used in a catchy
and meaningful way，” said Dr.Karen Ludke. The findings may help those who have difficulties learning foreign languages. On his blog(博客), Dr.Ludke writes, “A listenandrepeat singing method can support foreign language learning, and opens the door for future research in this area.”
Many language teachers know the value(价值) of using and singing. Hua Zhuying, a teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington, D．C.depends heavily on songs in teaching Chinese. She says.“I use music all the time to teach children Chinese. For little kids usually we use English songs but teach them the Chinese lyrics. So it's easy for them to start because they know the music. Not only does it work, but it is fun for the kids.”
“Sometimes, I think if I were taught English that way, maybe I would speak much better English than now.” Hua Zhuying adds.
Our brain likes music, especially(尤其) for remembering. So, if you're still worrying about learning a language, why not try it?

A city without cars would be very strange，right? But Venice is such a city.
Venice is in the northeast of Italy. It wasn't built on land，like Beijing or Shanghai，but on more than 110 islands.Seawater is everywhere around the city.
Even so，travel isn't difficult. The waterways have always been the best way to get around. There are 117 waterways and more than 400 bridges that can guide you where you want to go.People in Venice move from place to place by boat. They like to enjoy the scenery(风光) and cool summer nights while taking boat trips. They can talk to other people as they go along.
Venice grew out of small islands in saltwater lakes when some Italians escaped from a war over 1，500 years ago，and built homes there.
Water makes the city special，but it is also a big problem.Sometimes tourists will have such strange experiences. One moment they walk across the Rialto Bridge，and there's nothing special. But when they come back to the bridge an hour later，it's underwater and everyone is wearing rain boots.
Once，people used too much underground water. That made the city get lower little by little. Now the city has gone down by 23 centimeters.Another problem is the rising seawater. The temperature has risen over the years. This has made the ice of the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋) melt(融化)．
Every year，high water hits the city in autumn and winter. When a lot of water comes，more than half of the city is underwater.
Scientists are trying different ways to stop the city from getting even lower. The Italian government has asked some of Italy's biggest companies to build the MOST project，which was planned to be built under the seawater to stop the rising water.Anyway，this project is helping solve the problem.

Tigers are different from others in the cat family：they like water，and they often jump into rivers to swim.
Some tigers live in very cold places like North Korea，Eastern Russia，and Northeast China.Other tigers live in warmer places—India and parts of Southeast Asia.

The long trunk of an elephant is a wonderful example of skill. The neck of fourfooted animals is usually long, to have them reach their food without difficulty, but the elephant has a short neck, to make him more easily support the weight of his huge head and heavy teeth. His long trunk lets him get his food easily.
The trunk of an elephant is to him what the neck is to other animals. It is also a nose to him, for at the end of it there is an empty place like a cup, and in the bottom of the cup are two holes, and the animal smells and breathes through them.It is an arm and a hand too, so that it has been said that the elephant carries his nose in his hand, and it might also have been said that he breathes by his hand.
At the end of the trunk, there is a strange part, about five inches long, which forms a finger. With this finger the animal can pick up the smallest piece of money from the ground, and he has been taught to make marks like letters with a pen.
The trunk of a fullgrown elephant is about eight feet long. The elephant has such great strength that he can knock down a man with it.

On May 23, Shenzhen introduced(介绍) hard new rules in order to discourage (劝阻) the “Chinese style of crossing the road”．“Chinese people cross roads without thinking about the traffic lights, so long as they are part of a crowd，” said a post on Sina Weibo.
A CCTV news program showed that in only an hour, more than 600 people jumped red lights when crossing a road in Shijiazhuang, Hebei.
Many people say that they jaywalk (乱穿马路) because the red light lasts too long.Such an opinion(观点) is supported by a research team at Tongji University. The
did research on people's waiting times at different road crossings for three years. They found that Chinese people would wait for 70 to 90 seconds(秒) before they lost their patience(耐心)．“People are likely to ignore(忽视) the light when the waiting time is longer than they can bear，” said Ni Ying, a member of the research team.
However, a survey on Sina Weibo suggested that people jaywalk mainly because they ignore rules.“I always obey traffic rules.Time is important but safety should come first，” someone wrote on his Weibo.
Many countries give out punishments to jaywalkers. In Singapore, the maximum can be three months in prison. Some Chinese cities have started taking some action, too.For example, the first three people in a jaywalking group will be fined 50 yuan

Although some people don't like talking about the danger of population growth, the world's population continues to grow. Most of the growth is happening in Africa and parts of South and West Asia that are least able to afford(支付得起) more people. However, population increases have slowed or even stopped in Europe, North America and Japan.
Today about 80 percent of the world's people live in developing countries. Asia has more than doubled its population since 1960, but Europe's has risen by only 20 percent. The United States is the only Western country whose population is expected (期望)to increase—largely not because of births, but of immigration.
Now some six billion mouths
must be fed and bodies clothed and housed. The misuse of the earth's resources(资源) to meet those needs, for example, poor farming practices and overfishing is a possible danger to human life and health around the world.People across the world are trying to find ways to solve the problems brought by increasing population.

each other because conditions are overcrowded. Then there are others where it seems that hardly anybody lives. What influences (影响)this unequal distribution(不平衡的分布) of people? There are some advantages and disadvantages of living in a certain area.
The first reason is climate and resources.Climate is the usual weather conditions in an area.Areas that have bad weather are not good places to live in.The north and south poles at the top and bottom of the world may be beautiful in their rugged, natural way, but the disadvantage of the cold and windy conditions usually keeps people away. When it comes to climate, warm conditions and a normal amount of rainfall are advantages that attract people.
Natural resources are things that we get from nature that help us live. Each area has different resources.People who enjoy the beach can make their living by catching and selling the ocean's many fish and other sea creatures. Those who like farming can use rich soil in valleys near rivers. Some people are willing to accept the terrible conditions of deserts or mountains in order to use the resources like oil or woods.

Now satellites are helping to forecast(预报) the weather. They are in space，and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere(大气)，because this is where the weather forms(形成)．They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists(气象学家)can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures，the scientists can often say how the weather will change.
Today，nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures，the meteorologists compare them with earlier ones.Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change，too. In their next weather forecast，the meteorologists can say this.
