Reading is important in learning. There are two kinds of reading. One is reading loudly. The other is silent (默默的) reading. They are not the same. When you read aloud, you move your mouth. You use your teeth and your tongue (舌头) and your lips (嘴唇). When you read aloud, you make the sound of every word on the page. When you do silent reading, you do not make any sounds. You do not have to make the sounds of every word. So silent reading should be much quicker. When you do silent reading, try to just look at the words. Do not sound them out in your mind. That will make your reading faster. Put your finger on your lips as you read silently. Do your lips move? They should not.

When you are reading something in English, you may often see a new words here and there. What’s the best way to know the new word?
You may look it up in an English-Chinese dictionary (词典). It will tell you a lot about the word: the Chinese meaning, how to use it and so on. But how can you know where the word is in the dictionary? How to find it quickly and correctly?
All the English words are i n the alphabetical order. In the dictionary you can first see the words beginning with the letter A, then B, C, D, E…to Z. That mean s, if there are two words ‘bedroom’ and ‘summer’, ‘bedroom’ will be before ‘summer’. If there are two words both beginning with the same letter, you may look at the second letter. Then the third, the fourth… For example, ‘drive’ is before ‘during’, ‘elephant’ is before ‘eleventh’…

Ways of learning English
This week we asked students at Luoyang Middle School about the best ways to learn English. Many said they learned by using English. Some students have more specific suggestions. Zhang Zhiyu, for example, said the best way to learn new words was by reading English magazines. She said that memorizing the words of pop songs also helped a little. When we asked about studying grammar, she said, “I never study grammar. It’s too boring.”
Wang Dongdong feels differently. He has been learning English for six years and really loves it. He thinks studying grammar is a great way to learn a language. He also thinks that watching English movies isn’t a bad way because he can watch the actors say the words. Sometimes, however, he finds watching movies frustratng because the people speak too quickly.
DongXingxing said that joining the English Club at school was the best way to improve her English. Students get lots of practice and they also have fun. She added that having conversations with friends was not helpful at all. “We get excited about something and then end up speaking in Chinese,” she said.

Last summer, I went to my father’s hometown in Henan Province. I went there with my parents and stayed there for two weeks. Because there wasn’t a train in my father’s hometown, we went there by bus. When I was there, my grandma and grandpa took me to see crops in the fields. It was a funny journey and I had a great time. I’m looking forward to going there next summer.
