“It seems that positive feelings may reduce the       19     of illness,” said the chief researcher
Sheldon Cohen.
In an earlier study, Cohen found that people who were      20       caught colds less often. And they seldom told their doctors that they felt     21      .
In this study, Cohen’s team interviewed 193 adults every day for two weeks. In this      22      , the
people told researchers about      23        happy or sad feelings that day. Two weeks later, all of them were made to catch colds by doctors, and they had to stay     24      in a room for six days.

三、阅读理解(共 15 小题,每小题 2 分,计 30 分)
A.读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出最佳答案。
A
English book Animal Farm (1945) tells a story about farm animals. They are fed up with ( 受够了) Mr Jones, the farmer. He treats them badly, so they
decide to kick him off the farm and run the farm themselves.
One day an old pig called Old Major gathers the animals around him. He tells them that all animals should stand together. He says they should take over the farm. They say that all animals are equal.
After they get rid of ( 摆 脱 ) Mr Jones, two pigs become the leaders of
Animal Farm. One pig called Snowball is a great speaker. He has big ideas for Animal Farm. The other leader is a pig called Napoleon. Napoleon is a crafty (狡猾的) animal. He brings together supporters by
offering them advantages.
Napoleon makes a war against Snowball and kicks him away from the farm. He turns Snowball into a big enemy. He says that Snowball is working with Farmer Jones and other farmers to destroy Animal Farm.
But as it turns out it is Napoleon who is working with the enemies of the animals. He joins up with the old human enemies of the animals. But he tells the animals that he is working for them. Meanwhile the animals work hard. It seems that it is as bad to live under Napoleon as it was under Farmer Jones!
Why is the story so important?
Animal Farm is an excellent choice for learners of English because it’s very short. The language is also simple.
Like many famous stories Animal Farm is not just a book. It was played on the BBC radio in 1947. The big modern way of telling stories is in movies of course. Orwell’s book has become a film twice. Perhaps it won’t surprise you that the first one (1954) was a cartoon. In 1984 another film was made.

version was made and it toured a number of British cities.

For years people have enjoyed following the life of Garfield the cat. Garfield is a popular comic book character, known for being lazy and fat. But the cat was back in the news recently for something you might not expect.
A man in the United States changed the  gender of Garfield to “none” on the cat’s Wikipedia ( 维 基 百 科 ) page. After that lots of people got angry and kept
changing Garfield’s Wikipedia page. They argued about whether the cat was a boy,
girl or neither.
Wikipedia finally locked the page to stop people editing( 编辑) it. Jim Davis, Garfield’s creator, settled(解决) the argument.
“Garfield is male,” he  simply told the Washington Post. The 71-year-old artist said he liked working with animals because they didn’t have to be old, young, boys or girls. He was angry that some people cared so much about Garfield’s gender.
It seems like quite an unnecessary argument to have. But it is not the only recent example of argument about gender.
To celebrate International Women’s Day in Australia earlier this year, the city of Melbourne made
10 traffic lights with a figure( 人形) dressed in a skirt. They were designed to celebrate Women’s Day and give them more confidence in public.
But not everyone thinks the idea is necessary. Some people think it is important for women to be treated fairly in Australia, but that this idea is silly.
“I’m all for doing anything we can for gender equity(公平), but really?” Melbourne mayor( 市长)
Robert Doyle told the Herald Sun. The mayor said this idea is more likely to be laughed at than bring respect to women.
( )36. What put Garfield the cat back in the news recently?
A. The cat’s lazy character.
B. Being included in Wikipedia.
C. The cat’s picture being changed on Wikipedia. D. The cat’s gender being changed on Wikipedia.
( )37. What does the underlined word gender in the passage mean?
A. 个性 B. 性别 C. 外貌 D. 脾气
( )38. According to Jim Davis,    .
A. Wikipedia should lock the page about Garfield
B. Garfield can be a boy or a girl, and young or old C. artists don’t care about animals’ age or gender
D. it’s unnecessary to take Garfield’s gender seriously

(     )39. Why did Melbourne make 10 traffic lights with a figure dressed in a skirt?
A. To laugh at women in public
B. To celebrate International Women’s Day
C. To bring more chances to women
D. To treat women fairly in Australia
(     )40. What did Melbourne mayor Robert Doyle think of the traffic light idea?
A. It would give women more confidence in public.
B. It would help women be treated fairly in Australia. C. It would bring respect to women.
D. It was not a good idea for gender equity.
C
Do equations and historical( 历史的) facts give you a headache? A change in the school timetable
(课程表) may be the cure.
This  suggestion  is  based  on  a  recent  study  carried  out  by  scientists  from  Royal  Holloway, University of London, the UK. They found that teenagers could get higher marks in math if they studied in the mornings and better grades in history if they were taught in the afternoons.
The researchers studied students’ grade reports, class timetables and absence rates( 缺席率) at a
middle school in Bulgaria over nine years. The results showed that when teenagers had math classes earlier in the day, they scored about 7 percent higher in tests than when taught in the afternoon. Lower-ability students feel stressed most when they were studying math in the afternoon. In history, students taught in the afternoon scored about 6 percent higher than when they were taught in the
morning. However, there was no sign that similar patterns( 模 式 ) work for other subjects such as
languages or geography.
Velichka Dimitrova, who did the study, said the findings show that we perform( 表 现 ) better at
different times of the day. “In the morning, our brains are better and fresher, so we are better at doing something like problem solving, where we require more speed and attention” Dimitrova told The Telegraph. “In the afternoon, it seems that this process slows down. On the other hand, history is more suitable for the afternoon, when we are more creative and open to discussion,” she said. Subjects such as foreign languages require both memory and creativity. This is perhaps why the time of day had no influence on language learning.
Time-of-day influences such as these are believed to have something to do with the body clock.
This is the system in our bodies that controls when we need to sleep. Some schools in the US and UK have tried later school starting times for teenagers, whose body clocks change as they grow into adults. Dimitrova believes schools should jump at this chance to improve their students’ performance jus t by changing their timetables.
(     )41. In which classes do you learn equations (Paragraph 1) according to the passage?
A. Maths B. Geography C. English D. History
(     )42. According to the new study,           .
A. afternoon classes lowered students’  performance in history
B. school timetables have an influence on every subject C. it was better for students to learn math in the morning D. lower-ability students preferred to start school earlier
(     )43. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. It shows the importance of studying different subjects at different times of the day.
B. It introduces the best time to do things that require memory and creativity.
C. It encourages students to change their study methods for better results.
D. It explains how school timetables affect people’s study performance.

( )44. According to Dimitrova,    .
A. rearranging(重新安排) school timetables is the best way to improve students’ test scores
B. schools should follow advice from the study and actively change their timetables
C. most schools don’t have enough resources to support timetable changes
D. schools should think twice before changing their class timetables
( )45. What is the best title of this passage?
A. Time to change the timetable.
B. A survey carried out successfully.
C. Secrets of learning math and history well. D. Body clocks influence grades.

B. 阅读下列短文,根据短文内容完成下面表格。(共 l0 小题,每小题 l 分,计 l0 分)
Each summer, you hear news that some sports players are sent to hospitals because it is too hot. Our  bodies can’t be outside in the sun for a long time. So in hot summers, be careful about playing sports outside.
Firstly, to play sports safely in hot weather, you must drink water. Sports drinks are great for athletes, but they have so much sugar that they’ll dehydrate(使脱水)you more. However,  drinking a
few bottles of sports drinks will be good for you.
Secondly, be sure to take  enough breaks to let your body rest. If your coach doesn’t let you do so in the heat, don’t wait until you feel uncomfortable. Just be honest with your coach when you need breaks.
Thirdly, when you have a break, don’t sit in the sun. With the sun beating down on you, you’ll only  heat up and sweat(冒汗)more. Take a seat under a tree, or even better, go indoors for a little while.
Cooling yourself down can help you stay active longer.
Fourthly, remember that the earlier in the day you start your exercise, the cooler it will be. If you can start practice before the sun comes up, you have a few good hours to practice in the cool hours of the morning. Also, the earlier you practice, the earlier you can finish the exercise. If you need more practice time, come back to the field later in the evening when the sun is setting.
Last but not least, you should watch your food. Eat food which is high in water, starch(淀粉)and
carbohydrate(糖类), but be sure to get a good balance in your diet.
As long as you pay attention to the above, playing sports safely in the heat isn’t a difficult thing.
