One sunny Monday, I decided to go for a walk on the path near my house with my husband. On my 41 was a very special ring: I’d just picked it up from jeweller’s the day before because I had it designed to hold a diamond my grandmother gave me for my 23rd birthday. I looked down at my ring as I began my 42 , feeling as sunny as the day.
Imagine my sadness when I looked again at the end of the path and found the diamond was 43 . Anxiously (焦急地), I started back along the path, looking for the 44 stone. In my heart, I knew how hopeless my search was. The path was long and covered with leaves. As I searched the 45 , crying and upset, I met an old gentleman. “What’s the matter, love?” he asked 46 . “Lost something?” I explained about the missing diamond and showed him the hole 47 my ring. He whistled. “That’s going to be hard to find. Tell you what, love, I walk along this path every day. I’ll keep my 48 open for it.” I thanked him, 49 nothing, but told him my husband often walked our dogs along the path 50 he might find something.
A few days later, my husband met the old man on the path. “ Guess what?” he said, “I found your diamond!” 51 he’d found the tiny stone and was willing to hand the diamond back to my husband, saying casually (漫不经心地), “It was lucky that I found it. I only have 50 percent eyesight in one eye. ” When my husband offered him money for his help, he refused it. He could have easily 52 the diamond, or sold it, as it’s worth several thousand dollars, 53 , thanks to this man, I’ll spend the rest of my days trying to do something like that for 54
person. And what I have to do is to look at my ring and 55 myself that there are kind and generous souls there.

We can express thoughts and feelings and send sounds and pictures on our smartphones today. We can't send tastes，smells or touch. But some scientists in Britain are trying to develop a way for smartphones to do that.
To give users a sense of taste, Adrian David Cheok and some other scientists designed two electrodes (电极片). “You put these two electrodes in your mouth, you put your tongue in between and then your tongue will get a virtual taste perception (虚拟味觉) in your brain,” said Professor Cheok. They have already created sour, salty, sweet and bitter tastes.
A device（装置） called “Scentee” permits users to have the sense of smell. Scientists put a Scentee into a smartphone, and it can spray (释放) small clouds of fragrance（气味）, including flowers, fruits and coffee. Professor Cheok says the person speaking can activate (激活) the device. Scentee holds a container（容器）with about 100 different smells. The container must be replaced when all the smells run out.
The sense of touch comes from a ring-like device. It is connected wirelessly to the smartphone. “I can be in London and my friend can be in Tokyo, and I can squeeze（紧握）my finger and then they'll get a squeeze on their finger through the Internet. It's a way of touch communication with small mobile devices,” Professor Cheok said.
Professor Cheok hopes devices like these will someday be added to houses. He says they may change the future of long-distance communication.

When I was in the second grade，my teacher gave all her students some seeds（种子）. She told us to watch the magic of the seeds once we planted them. Excitedly，I put a few seeds in my pot. I watered them for a few days and purple flowers came out.
In class，I reported back to my teacher that the magic was the purple flowers. My classmates reported back with the red，white or yellow ones. I was wondering why we didn't have green flowers. When the bell rang，we drew a conclusion“a flower garden is beautiful”，and this was my first gardening experience.
Years later，one day，when we drove by Naperville downtown in a summer. Mom pointed out a big land.“Look，this is the community garden land.”she told me.“What is a community garden land?”I asked.“When people live in apartments or town homes，they don't have much land. People pay a little money to rent（租）a piece of land from the city. They can grow anything.”“Why don't we rent one?”I curiously asked.“We don't need to.We have a house，so we have a small piece of land.”
A few years ago，an older couple moved in next door. They gave us some tomatoes from their garden. They grew the best tomatoes I had ever tasted. I asked my mom to buy some tomatoes just like our neighbors'. Mom said it was impossible to buy those tomatoes from the supermarket.
So，last year，I decided to try. I h ad my dad dig out a small land in the back yard of our house，put it some peat moss（泥炭藓）and mushroom compost（蘑菇肥）. For the start，I only planted some tomatoes and cucumbers黄瓜. Day by day，I looked after my garden and took out weeds（杂草）.I was surprised to see that cucumbers actually grow on the vine，and my tomatoes had a special kind of earthly smell.
At the same time，I found myself suddenly having an interest in weather. I always wished rain to water my little garden. My brother Alex teased me.“You are an old farmer now.”
One day，I found some tomatoes gone in one plant. I was a little sad. Who dared t o steal my t omatoes? It was a few rabbits. When I was about to drive them away，my dad stopped me and said,“Alice，the rabbits are thirsty. Let them eat as much as they want. Sharing your food is a good thing.”
Later on，I found people picking a few tomatoes in my little garden and eating them with a satisfying smile. I never said a word. Instead，I felt joy in my heart. When harvest time came，I picked so many fresh cucumbers and delicious tomatoes.
In America，people grow gardens everywhere. The air is always fresh and clean because of many trees，different plants and beautiful flowers. People there learn to love our earth，and love hearing the expression“go hug a tree”. Gardening needs lots of hard work and patience，but mother earth rewards us a lot.

Your smartphone may seem like the centre of your entertainment(娱乐), but a Kent State University study shows that too much phone use is taking the fun right out of our spare time.
Researchers watched a group of nearly 500 students and recorded their daily smartphone use. Those who were considered in the “high-use” group experienced more stress during their spare time than the other group.
So what can we do in order to really take advantage of our spare time? We have collected the
following activities that also take a few hours to complete, but best part of all, you’ll improve your health in the process（过程）.
Whether you’re at home or on holiday, it’s important to disconnect from the Wi-Fi. Walking
in a nature can do good to your health. As a professional（职业的）traveler, Samantha Brown put it in a recent passage, “ I put my map in my back pocket, put down my phones and take a good, long walk. Just walk around.”
Go to bed earlier. What can help improve your mood? Extra sleep, naturally. Getting the right
number of sleep is very important to our health and studies show that we don’t get enough of it.
Read a book. And let yourself get lost in a good story. Research shows that reading can
reduce stress, keep your brain sharp and can even help you sleep better. Everyone should spend at least 30 minutes reading every day.
Putting pen to paper is a good exercise. Try writing down your thoughts. Writing has a lot of
health advantages. Besides, writing down your thoughts may even help clear your mind.
Answer the following questions with no more than 5 words.
86.How many students did researchers watch in the record?
87.What did Samantha Brown put in his pocket?
88.How can people improve their moods according to the passage?
89.How long should people spend on books every day?
90.What can you do to help clear your mind according to the passage?
Jane was on her way home at around 6 o’clock. It was getting dark. As she drove into her community, she noticed a man.
She saw the man walking along the sidewalk next to some houses. He didn’t live in any of those houses. She had seen this man a few times before. He looked like a criminal. She drove by him. He looked at her car as she drove by. She continued driving and watched him in her rear view mirror (后视镜). She got to the corner and stopped. She continued to watch him walking i n her direction. Suddenly, he turned left up a driveway (车道). A red SUV was parked in the driveway right next to the sidewalk. She saw him walk up to the driver’s door and put his hand on the handle (把手). Then he returned to the sidewalk and went on to walk in her direction.
“What is that all about?” Jane wondered. Then she realized that he had tested the door to see if it was locked. “He is a criminal,” she thought. “That’s what he does. He just walks in our neighborhood looking for cars to break into.”
She called the police and described the man. The police officer said he knew who the man was. The p eople in the community called two or three times this week to report him walking by. But the police couldn’t arrest him for walking around unless they caught him with stolen things. “But he was testing that SUV door to see if it was unlocked,” she said.
“I’m sorry,” said the officer. “That’s not against the law. If you see him actually steal something, please give us a call.”

Recently we did a survey in our class about their heroes. Here're the results.
30% of the students consider Spud Webb as their hero because he never gave up though he was refused many times. Through hard work, he proved that the size of body does not matter--you can do almost anything if you never give up.
32% of the students say Tan Dun is their hero because he has a real gift for music. He could make music with common objects like stones and paper when he was young. He has successfully mixed Chinese music and Western music together to make a new type-music without boundaries.
38% of us admire Jackie Chan most. We think his films are special because he successfully joins humour and exciting action together. He also spends much time doing charity work. He has helped people not only in China but also in many other countries all over the world.
I think we should learn from these famous people.
