Mr Ma, a famous mental doctor (心理医生) from Beijing once said at an important meeting, "Now many young students can have problems with their minds. Some students become worried because they have to study very hard. Others have trouble getting on well with people around them like their parents and classmates. Parents and teachers should care more about this problem."
Then Mr Ma gave some examples. A middle school student from Xi'an was doing badly in his lessons. He thought his teachers and friends often laughed at him, and he became so nervous and worried that one night he left his home without telling his parents. Another student, a 14-year-old schoolgirl from Shanghai, was very afraid of exams. While she was reading the exam paper, she couldn't think of anything to write.
A recent report from a newspaper says about 18% of the young students in Shanghai have mental problems. They often feel worried and very unhappy. Unluckily, many of them won't go and ask for help. Some think they will look stupid if they go to see a doctor. Others won't talk about their secrets.
At the end of the meeting, Mr Ma gave some good ideas to young people:

I had to make a safe place to live. I could not stay where I was because there was no fresh water there. I found a good piece of flat ground up a hill, with a cliff(峭壁)on one side and a good view of the sea. I put up my tent near the cliff. I cut some wood and made a strong fence(栅栏)around the area. The fence did not have a gate or door. I used a ladder to get over it to reach my tent and then pulled the ladder inside the fence. Nobody else could come in. I was safe. I brought all my things inside the fence. It took a long time to do this, sometimes in heavy rain.
I made a kind of cave in the cliff behind me, and I put a lot of things there to keep them dry. During one storm, I was afraid that lightning would hit my gunpowder(火药),and I would lose it all. After the storm, I divided the gunpowder into small piles and put them in different places. Every day, I went out with my gun to shoot something that I could cook and eat. I found that there were goats on the island, and I soon shot one.
Every day, I made a mark on a piece of wood with a n axe(斧子). This way, I knew how long I had been on the island. I had some paper and ink from the ship, and I made notes about my new life. It was a terrible, lonely life, but at least I was alive, and I had saved many useful things from the ship, which would help to keep me alive.

I had been a happy girl until one day when I was fifteen months old.One of my eyes was badly hurt in an accident.I lost the sight of the eye, with an ugly scar around it.Children refused to play games with me.It made me very sad.I always walked, looking at the floor,so that people would not see the ugly face.My mother encouraged me to be brave. She told me,"Alice, hold your head up high and face the world. If you do,it will be OK,and people will see your beautiful soul."Mom's words meant different things to me over the years.
As a little child,I thought Morn meant,"Be careful or you will fall down."When I grew up,I still wanted to look down to hide my shame. She repeated these words whenever I wanted to hide.Mom's words helped me realize that I should look at people in the eye and let them know me.When I tried,I found people were friendly to me.
In high school,I worked hard at my lessons and succeeded in my studies.Everybody began to like me and I had some friends. However,I still felt sorry about my scar,my ugly face.Sometimes when things got really bad,I would cry to my mom.She was always there for me.She would look at me and said," Hold your head up high and face the world.Let them see the beauty that is inside."I became confident.
At university,I took part in all kinds of activities.I joined a music club.We held concerts to raise money to help poor children. The club became so famous and I had more friends. Then John,a popular musician, came into my life.He didn't mind the scar.We soon fell in love with each other. Two years later,we got married.

If you go to a fast food restaurant, you will probably see a lot of teenagers. Today, many teenagers are overweight, and the reason of this is because of their bad eating habits. Most teenagers love fast food with a lot of fat, oil, salt and sugar. People often call this kind of food “junk food”.

When I was 15 months old, I had a bad fall. I landed on a glass rabbit and it cut my eye badly enough to blind it. The doctor said if the eye was taken out, my face would become out of shape, so my scarred (有疤痕的)and blind eye lived on with me.
Not all people were friendly to me. Some asked uncomfortable questions about my eye or even played jokes on me. When the kids played games, I was always the “bad guy”. I grew up imagining (想象) that everyone looked down on me.
Yet every time Mum noticed I was unhappy, she would say to me, “The world inside you is always colourful. Hold your head up high and face the world.” It helped me move on in life.
As a teenager, I always looked down to hide my shame (羞愧)
, but I found that people liked me when I held my head up high. In high school I was even made monitor, but outside I still felt like a freak (怪物). All I really wanted was to look like other people. When things got really bad, I would cry to my mum and she would look at me with loving eyes and say, “Hold your head up high and face the world. Let them see the love that is inside.” Mum’s love and encouragement gave me the confidence to remove my own doubt (怀疑). Finally I was able to face everything bravely. I learned not only to appreciate (欣赏) myself but to have love for others.
“Hold your head up high” has been heard many times in my home. It influences my children. Each of my children has felt its power. It lives on with my children.
