Let A Miracle（奇迹） Happen
During my third year of teaching fourth-graders, a new student Mary came to my class.
I said “hello” to her, but there was no reply. "Mary," I said again, slowly and clearly. She raised her head and looked into my eyes. The smile on my face froze. The eyes in that sweet, little-girl face were strangely empty.
In the office, my headmaster told me Mary lived alone with her mother in Detroit. One night, several weeks ago, someone broke in and killed her mother in Mary's presence.
I needed to get the children's help before they could laugh at her about being "different." I explained gently to the children that Mary had been hurt badly, and they could do a lot to help her.
On Christmas Day, Mary's cards overflowed. She looked at each card without saying a word and put them in her box. Then on a late March day, "Spring's here!" the children cried. "Let's make a flower border(花边) for the room!" We chose papers in beautiful colors-with brown strips to weave（编织） into baskets. I showed the children how to weave baskets and how to fashion all the flowers in early spring. I encouraged Mary to try.
Suddenly, Kristie came hurrying to me, "Come and see Mary's basket. It's so pretty! " She said excitedly.
I caught my breath at its beauty. "Mary," I said. " I have never seen a more fantastic basket made of flowers. How did you ever manage?"
She looked at me with shining eyes of any normal little girl. "My mother loved flowers," she said simply. "She had all of these growing in our garden."
My tears(眼泪) came, and other children had tears in their eyes, too, but theirs - like mine - were tears of______!

Why do children need to read at least 20 minutes a day? Read it and you’ll know.
Reading is “brain (大脑) food”. Reading will improve many of the areas of the brain. Your eyes look at the words on the page. Your memory connects the words with what you already know about the story. Reading provides one of the most complex (复杂的) brain activities in life.
Reading improves listening skills. The experience of reading helps children develop good listening skills. Through reading they can know how to pronounce (发音) and learn new words to add to their vocabularies and connec t written words to the things in their real world.
Reading prepares children for school. In this way children are expected to come into school with high scores. There is a strong relationship (关系) between a child’s ability to read and his scores. Because so much of our studying depends on (取决于) our abilities to read, children must have strong reading skills to get good grades in school.
Reading improves relationships in your family. Because we are busy, it is difficult to have one-to-one time with our family member. Spending 20 minutes reading together each day provides this important time. There is nothing more wonderful than having the whole family together while reading wonderful books.

Before I was twelve years old, my family lived in the mountains. Our house was far from my school. It took me one hour to walk to school every morning. It was a happy time for me, because I could meet friends on the way, and we would go to school together. There were just six classes in my school, and only about twenty students in each class. We spent most of our time playing; the mountains were our playground. I still remember the different kinds of flowers, the songs of different birds, and the colors of trees in different seasons---everything was so interesting and beautiful. Even now I still miss my life in the mountains.
