What’s worse, they had to share a toilet with the rest of the community.
Even though they had no jobs, they didn’t have a lot of free time to waste. They spent most of the day working for local farmers planting vegetables and picking fruit so that they could earn their next meal. They had five ducks that could provide them with fresh eggs. In order to show that showering isn’t a big deal, an American hasn’t taken
a shower for 12 years. Instead, he sprays (喷洒) himself with something special
that is said to have kept him clean over the years.
Dave Whitlock, a chemical engineer, thinks no fact can show that bathing is a healthy practice. “I haven’t taken a shower for 12 years, ” he says. “In fact, the chemical (化学物) in our soap have killed all the friendly bacteria (细菌) that live on our skin when we use it. ”
For a long time, many people haven’t realized skin bacteria are important and helpful to the body. Although Whitlock isn’t a biologist (生物学家), he has tried his best to invent a kind of spray called “Mother Dirt” with friendly bacteria. According to Whitlock, the bacteria in the spray can take in something dirty on our skin and produce a kind of chemical which is good for our body.
Now the spray is being produced in a company which Whitlock has helped to set up. The spray has no smell and feels just like water. It can be sprayed all over the skin twice a day to avoid showering. And for those who really enjoy showering, the company is planning to develop a kind of special shower gel (沐浴露) with friendly bacteria.
56. Why hasn’t Whitlock taken a shower for 12 years?

More than 95 percent of people in the world have phones today, according to the United Nations. Phone calls and messages help us easily keep in touch with others. It means that we seldom write letters now. But a TV show, Letters Alive (《见字如面》), is bringing back this old habit.
Letters Alive got its idea from a UK program W. Both shows invite famous actors and actresses, but there are no funny jokes or different competitions. Instead, it’s just one person walking up to a microphone and reading a letter.
The letters were written by people from different times in history. For example, in one episode (集) they read a letter written by famous writer Xiao Hong to her younger brother in 1941. The letter shows that Xiao Hong missed her brother so much and had great hopes for his future.
“Every letter opens up another world for us,” according to Guan Zhengwen, the director of the TV show. “It seems that we can experience the real lives and feelings of the writers.”
Since its first episode on Dec 5, Letters Alive has been widely praised. Many audience (观众) members said that it has provided a breath of fresh air to today’s TV shows.
Apart from(除了) Letters Alive, some other cultural TV shows have also been well received by Chinese audiences. They include Chinese Poetry Conference (《中国诗词大会》) —a classical Chinese poetry competition, and Readers(《朗读者》), a programme that invites people to read poems and articles they like or wrote.
“This means that our audiences are not only looking for entertainment (娱乐) like gossip (八卦) and eye-catching games,” reported China Youth Daily. “Cultural values and true feelings are the keys to winning praise.”

It’s a big challenge for you to complete any personal goal in time. And it always seems that you won’t have enough time to finish all you need to do. Do you know the way to make the time for your goal? Here are some tips which may help you.
Focus on(集中) one thing at a time. Remember not to take on too many goals at a time, or your energy will be used up soon. Once one goal is finished, you can go to the next one. Set up at least a month per goal.
Prioritize(优先处理)the most important. We have more than one thing to complete. If we put all the things before our Goal, we won’t ever find the time for it. If we put our goal at the first place, we’ll make the time.
Keep your goal simple. It’s important not to make your goal too difficult. If you want to be slim, for example, you just need to develop the habit for your health, walking each day (or running, or cycling etc), drinking more water, eating fruits and vegetables instead of junk snacks.
Close your door. Try to set a time that you won’t be disturbed (打扰). If you are disturbed from time to time, you really don't have the time to help out. So you must shut your door when working on the most important tasks. If so, you will get them done better.
Stop wasting time. In our daily life, there are many things wasting your time, such as watching drama series and going to bars. If you don’t do them, it won’t make a great difference to your life. So stop doing them to free up time for your goals.

It is reported that 300 hundred million people in China have eyesight trouble. Here are three ways to save eyes.
First, don’t tie your shoes too closely. Try wearing comfortable and soft socks or walking without socks and shoes at home. While you are travelling, try wearing cloth shoes in order to improve blood circulation.
Second, walking on tiptoe is good for one’s eyesight. It can fight against eyesight trouble.
Third, rope skipping can also be good for one’s eyesight. While skipping rope, one has to move quickly, making both the brain and the eyes excited. It may also help make one grow taller.
Besides foot exercise, it is good to pull one’s ears. Pulling the ears 20 times quickly is also a great way. It can keep one’s eyes healthy.
One day a man and a tiger were walking together. The man said, ‘We men are the strongest in the world.’ The tiger said to the man, ‘ What did you say? Men are the strongest? Oh, no, I don’t think so. We tigers are the strongest.’ Then they walked on. They saw a picture. In the picture there was a man sitting on top of a tiger. ‘Look’, the man said, ‘the man is on top of the tiger. So you see, we men are stronger than you.’ ‘Oh, no, if we tigers know how to draw pictures, we’d put the man under the tiger.’
